Current view: Data table and detailed info
Taxonomic note
The genus Paradoxornis has been moved from the family Sylviidae to Paradoxornithidae following Cai et al. (2019).
Previously placed in Psittiparus (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) but moved to current genus following Cai et al. (2019).
Until recently (King and Robson 2008) considered conspecific with P. ruficeps following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993), but differs in its slightly darker upperparts (1); bright buff vs buff-stained white underparts (2); overall larger size (effect size for bill on published data (King and Robson 2008) 1.68, score 1); and song a rhythmic phrase ending with long drawn-out whistles at about 2–3 kHz vs a series of 4–6 descending whistles each about the same length and shape, typically in range 3–4.5 kHz, thus main differences being presence of long notes (3) and greater variety of notes (1).
Birds from N Laos and N Vietnam (E Tonkin) have been separated under name magnirostris, but differences appear too slight to merit taxonomic recognition. Monotypic.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified. This species is considered to have a medium dependency on forest habitat, and tree cover is estimated to have declined by 12.6% within its mapped range over the past 10 years (Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Therefore, as a precautionary measure, it is tentatively suspected that this loss of cover may have led to a decline of between 1-19% in the species' population size over the same time frame.
