Rufous-backed Stipplethroat Epinecrophylla haematonota

Taxonomy

Taxonomic note

Epinecrophylla haematonota and E. fjeldsaai (SACC [2005 and updates]; Sibley and Monroe [1990, 1993]; Stotz et al. [1996]) have been lumped and subsequently split into E. haematonota and E. amazonica following del Hoyo and Collar (2016). Previously included in Myrmotherula but transferred to present genus after Isler et al. (2006). Original note from Illustrated Checklists: Until recently, considered conspecific with E. amazonica. Vocal and genetic analysis (Whitney et al. 2013b) indicates that taxon fjeldsaai (Krabbe et al. 1999), treated as a full species in HBW, is better considered a subspecies of present species (indistinguishable on voice although moderately distinct in plumage). Genetic evidence suggests that subspecies pyrrhonota (which occurs sympatrically in E Andes of Colombia with E. spodionota [Salaman et al. 2002]) is distinctive, but it is vocally nearly identical to haematonota although, like fjeldsaai, moderately distinct in plumage. Three subspecies recognized.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified. This species is considered to have a high dependency on forest habitat, and tree cover is estimated to have declined by 2.2% within its mapped range over the past 10 years (Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). It is therefore tentatively suspected that this rate of cover loss may have led to a decline of between 1-19% in the species' population size over the same time frame, with a best estimate of reduction being less than 5%.
