Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as fairly common to common in Myanmar and China, generally rare in the Indian subcontinent, very local and rare in Pakistan, rare in Bhutan and a fairly common, non-breeding visitor to Thailand and Laos (del Hoyo et al. 2005).

Trend justification:

The species is tentatively assessed as being in decline due to habitat loss per Tracewski et al. (2016) and high hunting pressure.
