Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as common in many areas, abundant in south and west India and very common in Hong Kong (del Hoyo et al. 2005). National population sizes have been estimated at c.10,000-100,000 breeding pairs in China and c.100-10,000 introduced breeding pairs in Japan (Brazil 2009). The population is estimated to be in decline following local declines and extinctions owing to hunting and trapping pressure (del Hoyo et al. 2005).
