Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as generally scarce, although locally common in Argentina. The population in Chuquisaca, Bolivia, is estimated as 3,000 individuals (del Hoyo et al. 1994).

Trend justification: The population is suspected to be in decline owing to ongoing habitat destruction and unsustainable levels of hunting.
