Taxonomic note
Stephanoxis lalandi and S. loddigesii (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were previously lumped as S. lalandi following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993). Original note from Illustrated Checklists: Usually considered a subspecies of S. lalandi, but marked plumage differences (noted in HBW) include glittering purple-violet vs emerald-green crown (3); whitish-grey of lower face extending under chin (in lalandi blue of underparts extends from chin to mid-flanks) (2); blue of throat, breast and belly darker and narrower down body, so that grey of flanks more or less continuous (3); bill longer (effect size 8.76, score 3). Monotypic.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as 'uncommon' (Stotz et al. 1996). The population trend is difficult to determine because of uncertainty over the impacts of habitat modification on population sizes.
