Taxonomic note
Cantorchilus modestus and C. zeledoni (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) were previously lumped as Thryothorus modestus following AOU (1998 & supplements), Sibley & Monroe (1990, 1993) and Stotz et al. (1996).

Population justification: The population of subspecies modestus is suspected to number 500,000-4,999,999 mature individuals (Partners in Flight 2019), and the population of subspecies elutus is suspected to number 50,000-4,999,999 mature individuals (A. Panjabi in litt. 2017). Consequently, the global population of Plain Wren may number 550,000-5,499,999 mature individuals.
Trend justification: The species is thought to be stable (Partners in Flight 2019).
