Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified. However, the species is reported to be still common in the northern part of its range but would appear to be less abundant in the south (Frith and Beehler 1998).

The species is tentatively assessed as being in decline due to habitat loss per Tracewski et al. (2016) and unsustainable levels of hunting.
