Justification of Red List category
This species has a small range in the most remote and inaccessible areas of montane forest on the island of Panay. Its population size has not been quantified but it is described as locally common and, in the absence of any acting threats, is presumed to be stable. It is therefore listed as Least Concern.
Population justification
The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is locally common (Allen 2020).
Trend justification
Data on population trends are lacking; however, remote sensing data (Global Forest Watch 2021, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein) indicate that forest cover loss in this species' range is negligible (0.3-0.7% over the past decade) and unlikely to being exceeding natural variation. The habitats occupied by this species are unlikely to be affected by human activities owing to their steep, sloping nature. The population is therefore suspected to be stable and unlikely to decline in the near future.
Zosterornis latistriatus is endemic to Panay, Philippines, where it occurs on Mt Baloy, Mt Madja-as, and Dagsalan, upper Aklan River. It is common and described as the most abundant bird species in montane mossy forest on Mt Baloy, as well as on Mt Madja-as. It is likely to occupy this habitat throughout the estimated 700 km2 of Panay's remaining closed-canopy high-elevation forest.
This species is known from montane mossy forest from 1,000 m to 1,900 m (Allen 2020).
The montane habitats occupied by this species appear to remain relatively secure and are unlikely to be at imminent threat from logging, conversion and development. However, forests above 1,000 m elsewhere in the Philippines have been cleared and so this may be a future threat for the present species. As a montane species confined to the highest available elevations, it may be impacted by climate change.
Conservation Actions Underway
No targeted conservation actions are known for this species; however, its habitat is relatively secure from threats at present.
Conservation Actions Proposed
Monitor populations and habitat trends at known sites throughout the range. Effectively protect significant areas of suitable forest at key sites, in both strictly protected areas and community-led multiple use areas.
