Painted Manakin Machaeropterus eckelberryi

Taxonomy

Taxonomic note
Painted Manakin Machaeropterus eckelberryi is accepted as a newly described species following Lane et al. (2017), with additional support for species level divergence from both M. striolatus and M. regulus from a detailed vocal analysis (Boesman 2016), resulting in a score of 7 for M. eckelberryi versus M. striolatus, and 6-7 versus M. regulus. Further, the new taxon greatly resembles M. striolatus aureopectus, which achieves a score of 5 on morphological differences alone from M. regulus (del Hoyo et al. 2016). Versus M. striolatus the score is augmented by 1 for the darker green-olive upperparts and may even merit a further score of 1 for longer wings/primary extension, although this must await a larger sample in particular of M. s. aureopectus.

Population justification: The population size of Machaeropterus eckelberryi has not yet been estimated but is assumed to considerably exceed 1000 mature individuals (Lane et al. 2017) and is here placed in the band 20,000-49,999 mature individuals.

Trend justification: The population is suspected to be stable in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats (Lane et al. 2017).
