Justification of Red List category
This species has a restricted range where habitat degradation is ongoing. It is therefore is assessed as Near Threatened.
Population justification
The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as uncommon (Eaton et al. 2021).
Trend justification
There are no data on population trends, however the population is suspected to be in slow decline owing to ongoing tree cover loss within the range. Remote sensing data indicate that forest loss is occurring at a rate equivalent to c.3-4% in ten years (Global Forest Watch 2023, using data from Hansen et al. [2013] and methods disclosed therein). This species is commoner towards higher elevations (Rheindt and Eaton 2018, Eaton et al. 2021) and is tolerant of some degradation (A. Berryman pers. obs) however, declines are therefore unlikely to exceed the rate of tree cover loss and are tentatively placed in the range 1-5% in ten years.
This species is endemic to Morotai, North Maluku, Indonesia.
The species is described as uncommon in forest and edge habitat, being more common towards higher elevations (Eaton et al. 2021).
Habitat clearance through agricultural expansion and subsistence logging is ongoing within the range (Global Forest Watch 2023, using data from Hansen et al. [2013] and methods disclosed therein).
Conservation Actions Underway
No targeted conservation actions are known for this species. The only protected area on Morotai, Gunung Sabatai, may host this species, but covers only a fraction of its range (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2023).
