Taxonomic note
Penelopides affinis (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) was previously split as P. affinis and P. samarensis following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: The global population size has not been directly quantified, but the species is reported to be common in primary forest (del Hoyo et al. 2001) and the population is believed to be well over 10,000 birds (Poonswad et al., 2013)

Trend justification: The population is suspected to be in decline locally owing to ongoing habitat destruction and hunting for food (del Hoyo et al. 2001).
