Long-tailed Paradigalla Paradigalla carunculata

Justification

Justification of Red List category
This species occurs within a small range that is experiencing ongoing habitat loss and degradation. Although populations in remote areas are thought to remain secure, some declines are suspected to have occurred as a result of localised habitat loss. It is therefore currently considered Near Threatened.

Population justification
This is a poorly known species and no population estimates are available.

Trend justification
A slow population decline is suspected to be occurring in parts of the species' range as a result of habitat loss, although large tracts of suitable forest remain secure. Tree cover loss within the range is equivalent to 5-6% over the past three generations (Global Forest Watch 2022, based on Hansen et al. 2013). As a forest dependent species, it is suspected of declining at a rate similar to that of forest loss.

Distribution and population

Paradigalla carunculata is endemic to the Arfak Mountains in the Vogelkop peninsula of Papua (formerly Irian Jaya), Indonesia, where there are few records but it is probably not uncommon (Gibbs 1993, Poulsen and Frolander 1994, Frith and Beehler 1998). An undescribed Paradigalla taxon discovered in the nearby Fakfak Mountains, and possibly occurring on other mountain ranges in the Vogelkop, may be this species, although it shows some features of Short-tailed Paradigalla P. brevicauda (Gibbs 1994, Frith and Beehler 1998).

Ecology

This species inhabits montane forest and forest edge from 1,400 to 2,100 m (Frith and Beehler 1998, Beehler and Pratt 2016).

Threats

This species may be declining locally through forest loss, but is probably secure in most of its range. The extensive forests within its small range remain largely undisturbed owing to their geographical isolation and the low density and traditional lifestyle of the human population, although deforestation is occurring in the hills (Sujatnika et al. 1995, Global Forest Watch 2022).

Conservation actions

Conservation Actions Underway
There is one large protected area in the Arfak mountains, which has been proposed for extension (Sujatnika et al. 1995). CITES Appendix II.

Conservation Actions Proposed
Determine whether the currently undescribed Paradigalla taxon from the Fakfak Mountains belongs to this species. Conduct repeated surveys within the species' range to determine its current distribution and abundance, as well as assess population trends and rates of habitat loss. Conduct ecological studies to improve understanding of its precise habitat requirements, tolerance of secondary habitats and response to fragmentation. Effectively protect significant areas of suitable habitat at key sites, in both strictly protected areas and community-led multiple use areas.
