Taxonomic note
Ammospiza leconteii (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) was previously placed in the genus Ammodramus following AOU (1998 & supplements); Sibley & Monroe (1990, 1993); Stotz et al. (1996).

Population justification: The global population is estimated to number 5,100,000 mature individuals (Partners in Flight 2019).
Trend justification: The species has been undergoing a large decline at an average rate of 2.2% per year between 1970 and 2017 (Partners in Flight 2019). Short-term trends however suggest that the population trend is stabilising, so that the species has declined very slowly over the past ten years (Pardieck et al. 2018; see also Meehan et al. 2018).
