Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as widespread and reasonably common. Sub species joretiana and darwini may number fewer than c.10,000 individuals (Madge and McGowan 2002). The population size in China has been estimated at c.100-10,000 breeding pairs (Brazil 2009). This species is considered to have a high dependency on forest habitat, and tree cover is estimated to have declined by 1.5% within its mapped range over the past three generations (Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). A high prevalence in trade databases (Donald et al. 2024) and observations that the species is frequently hunted means that a population decline is suspected, though the rate of reduction is likely to be less than 5% over the past three generations.
