Taxonomic note
Akialoa ellisiana, A. stejnegeri and A. lanaiensis (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) were previously placed in the genus Hemignathus and lumped as H. ellisianus following AOU (1998 and supplements).

Population justification: No extant population remains.
Trend justification: The species persisted in Kaua'i's Alaka'i Wilderness Preserve for some time, but has not been recorded with certainty since 1965 despite intensive surveys in the region and is presumed extinct (Olson and James 1995, Gorresen et al. 2009, Hume 2017).
