Taxonomic note
Peltohyas australis (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) was previously placed in the genus Charadrius. Race whitlocki has been proposed for birds in C and SW Australia, but considered doubtfully valid. Monotypic.

Population justification: The population is estimated to number 14,000 individuals, roughly equating to 9,300 mature individuals. Numbers are suspected to fluctuate, but with a stable trend over the longer term (Wetlands International 2023).
Trend justification: The population trend is difficult to determine because of uncertainty over the impacts of habitat modification on population sizes.
