Hermit Wood-wren Henicorhina anachoreta

Justification

Justification of Red List category
The species has a small range within which habitat loss is occurring, however its range is not currently severely fragmented or restricted to a small number of locations. It is therefore listed as Near Threatened.

Population justification
The population has not been quantified since the species was split.

Trend justification
The population is suspected to be in decline owing to ongoing habitat destruction and fragmentation.

Distribution and population

This species is endemic to the Santa Marta mountains in Colombia. Tracewski et al. (2016) estimated the maximum possible Area of Occupancy for the species (calculated as the remaining tree area within the species’s range) to be c.2566.3 km2, rounded here to 2,500 km2.

Ecology

It inhabits humid montane forest.

Threats

The principal causes of deforestation within the Santa Marta mountains are the development of cattle ranches and Pinus plantations, illegal agricultural expansion, logging and burning (Renjifo et al. 2002).

Conservation actions

Conservation and research actions underway
No targeted actions are known. It occurs within Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Natural Park.

Conservation and research actions needed
Conduct surveys to establish the state of the population and its ecological requirements. Develop a management and conservation strategy for the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, particularly for montane forests (Renjifo et al. 2002).
