LC
Grey-cheeked Fulvetta Alcippe morrisonia

Taxonomy

Taxonomic note
Following Cai et al. (2019), all members of genus Alcippe now moved to their own family Alcippeidae. Geographical variation slight, despite number of named subspecies. Species subject to several molecular analyses in recent years (Qu et al. 2015, Song et al. 2009, Zou et al. 2007), the first resulting in suggestions for possible new species limits, but an error in the identity of a sample rendered the exercise uncertain (Pilgrim et al. 2009); rearrangement made in partial response to molecular findings (Robson 2008) rendered untenable by subsequent groupings of clades (Qu et al. 2015); moreover, vocal differences among all subspecies slight, with fratercula and yunnanensis emerging as a unit marginally more distinctive than others (Boesman 2016). Eight subspecies recognized.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as common to locally very common (del Hoyo et al. 2007), while national population sizes have been estimated at c.10,000-1 million breeding pairs in China and c.100,000-1 million breeding pairs in Taiwan (Brazil 2009). This species is considered to have a medium dependency on forest habitat, and tree cover is estimated to have declined by 7.9% within its mapped range over the past 10 years (Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Therefore, as a precautionary measure, it is tentatively suspected that this loss of cover may have led to a decline of between 1-19% in the species' population size over the same time frame.
