Grey-capped Hemispingus Kleinothraupis reyi

Justification

Justification of Red List category
This species occurs within a small range. While large tracts of its habitat are protected, it is suspected that forests outside of protected areas are subject to degradation for agricultural encroachment. For these reasons, the species is classified as Near Threatened.

Population justification
The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as locally fairly common (Hilty and Sharpe 2020).

Trend justification
The population trend has not been quantified directly. The only potential threat known is the loss and degradation of forested habitat within the range. However currently, vast areas of forest remain within the range and tree cover loss is negligible (<1% over ten years; Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Therefore, in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats, the population is suspected to be stable.

Distribution and population

Kleinothraupis reyi occurs from Táchira through Mérida to Trujillo and adjacent southernmost Lara on the Cordillera de Mérida in the Andes of west Venezuela (Meyer de Schauensee and Phelps 1978, Hilty 2003).

Ecology

This species is found in or near Chusquea bamboo in humid, mossy montane and elfin forest and shrubby forest edge at elevations of 1,900-3,200 m, being most common at 2,150-3,000 m (Hilty 2003). Its ecology is not well known.

Threats

Large tracts of forest remain within its range. However, forests in lower elevations outside the range and outside of protected areas are under pressure from human settlements and conversion for cattle-ranching and agricultural cultivation; continued encroachment may affect the species' range in the future (Hilty and Sharpe 2020, C. J. Sharpe in litt. 2022).

Conservation actions

Conservation Actions Underway
Parts of the range are protected within Sierra Nevada National Park.

Conservation Actions Proposed
Survey to produce a precise quantification of the population size. Monitor the population trend. Monitor rates of habitat loss. Safeguard areas of montane forests within the range to protect them from agricultural encroachment. Raise awareness for the species and its habitat.
