Population justification: The species is described as fairly common to abundant, though generally uncommon in Peru, with densities of over 3-5 pairs/km2 observed in parts of the range (Stotz et al. 1996, Heynen and Kirwan 2020). Currently, about 140,000 km2 within the range are covered by forest with at least 75% canopy density (Global Forest Watch 2022). Assuming that 40% are occupied at this density, the global population may number 168,000-285,000 pairs. This equates to 336,000-570,000 mature individuals.

Trend justification: The population trend has not been investigated. Tree cover loss within the range is low (2% over ten years; Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). The species is restricted to humid and wet forests (Heynen and Kirwan 2020), and therefore population declines may exceed the rate of tree cover loss as a consequence of additional habitat degradation. Declines are here tentatively placed in the band 1-9% over ten years.
