Current view: Data table and detailed info
Taxonomic note
Previously lumped with C. poortmani (del Hoyo and Collar 2014), having previously been split following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993). Now split again but species limits within poortmani/alice/stenurus are very unclear, with evidence of sympatry between stenurus and alice, but alice is phenotypically the most divergent of the three (smaller, darker, very short bill), so recognition of stenurus requires recognition also of alice (thus aligning BirdLife taxonomy with other checklists). However, future genetic work may end up lumping all three taxa. Monotypic.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as locally common (Bündgen et al. 2020).
Trend justification: Vast areas of pristine forests remain across the species' range (Global Forest Watch 2022). The species also readily accepts man-made habitats such as plantations, parks, gardens and roadsides where stands of shrubs and trees are found (Bündgen et al. 2020). Therefore, in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats, the population is suspected to be stable.
