Current view: Data table and detailed info
Taxonomic note
Previously listed as Amazilia viridigaster (del Hoyo and Collar 2014), but moved to current genus following a recent overhaul of all genera by NACC, based on McGuire et al. (2014), Stiles et al. (2017a, b) and others. S. viridigaster and S. cupreicauda (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were previously lumped as Amazilia viridigaster following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993). Closely related to S. cupreicauda and S. tobaci and often considered conspecific with the former, but morphological differences support their separation as two distinct species (Weller 2000). Subspecies iodura has generally been overlooked or rejected in recent literature; on the basis of morphology, in combination with distribution, it appears, however, to be a valid subspecies; intergradation of the two subspecies may occur S of Táchira depression. Proposed subspecies melanura now regarded as an aberrant form of nominate subspecies. Two subspecies recognized.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as 'fairly common' (Stotz et al. 1996). This species is considered to have a medium dependency on forest habitat, and tree cover is estimated to have declined by 2.3% within its mapped range over the past 10 years (Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Therefore, as a precautionary measure, it is tentatively suspected that this loss of cover may have led to a decline of between 1-19% in the species' population size over the same time frame.
