Notharchus tectus and N. subtectus (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were previously lumped as N. tectus following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified given recent taxonomic splits. The species is described as 'fairly common but patchily distributed' (Stotz et al. 1996).
