Taxonomic note

Acridotheres grandis and A. javanicus (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) were previously lumped as A. grandis following Sibley & Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as common throughout its range (Feare and Craig 1998), while national population estimates include: < c.100 introduced breeding pairs in Taiwan and (for the subspecies javonicus) c.10,000-1 million introduced breeding pairs in Taiwan and c.100-10,000 introduced breeding pairs in Japan (Brazil 2009). The population is suspected to be stable in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats.
