Grand Cayman Bullfinch Melopyrrha taylori

Justification

Justification of Red List category
This species is suspected to have a small population, within a small range, that may be declining. Its population size is currently suspected to be sufficiently large to not warrant this species to be listed under a threatened category, but it may approach this threshold. Its range is not severely fragmented and there is uncertainty over the number of locations the species is found. Therefore, it is listed as Near Threatened.

Population justification
This species is described as 'common' (Rising 2016), but considering its very small range and based on population density estimates for closely related species, known records and assuming only a proportion of its range is occupied the population size likely falls in the range of 10,000-19,999 mature individuals.

Trend justification
The population is suspected to be declining as a result of invasive mammals, particularly in the west of the island (Bradley 2000). While habitat fragmentation has also been suggested to potentially also be an issue (Bradley 2000), forest loss in particular appears to be very low (Tracewski et al. 2016).

Distribution and population

Pyrrhulagra taylori is found only on Grand Cayman Island, in the Cayman Islands.

Ecology

This species is found in brushy areas, forest and mangroves (Rising 2016).

Threats

Habitat fragmentation and invasive mammals, particularly in the west of the island, have been reported to be potential threats (Bradley 2000).
