Justification of Red List category
This species is currently only known from a very small range. Habitat degradation and trapping may be causing declines and as such, the species is now listed as Endangered.
Population justification
Uncommon within a very small range, so placed in the band 1,000-2,499 mature individuals. This equates to 1,500-3,749 individuals in total, rounded here to 1,500-4,000 individuals. The estimate is provisional and requires confirmation.
Trend justification
Although the status of this species is very poorly known, it is thought that a slow decline may be occurring, owing to habitat degradation and trapping within its likely range (S. Mahood in litt. 2018).
Trochalopteron ngoclinhense was described in 1999. It is only known from Mt Ngoc Linh and Mt Ngoc Boc (Eames 2001) on the Kon Tum plateau of central Vietnam. At Mt Ngoc Linh, it has been recorded from the Ngoc Linh (Kon Tum) Nature Reserve and Ngoc Linh (Quang Nam) proposed nature reserve. It has also been recorded from Kon Plong Forest Complex (Eames et al. 2001). Similar forest occurs in the neighbouring Attapu and Se Kong provinces of Laos (Manh Hung Le 2014), although at the moment there is no evidence for the species occurring there (S. Mahood in litt. 2016). Tracewski et al. (2016) estimated the maximum Area of Occupancy (calculated as the remaining tree area within the species’s range) to be c.65 km2.
Observations have been made up to 2,200 m in the herb and shrub layers of primary, upper montane, evergreen forest. The lowest known record is at 1,480 m (Eames 2001). It is presumed to be resident. The holotype specimen had enlarged testes, which suggests breeding activity in May.
In Ngoc Linh (Kon Tum) Nature Reserve, 13% of evergreen forest was lost between 1976 and 1995. Forest at Ngoc Linh (Quang Nam) proposed nature reserve is threatened by clearance for agriculture, a process that is accelerating in response to natural population growth and settlement of migrants in the area. Trapping pressure is likely to accompany the conversion of habitat in this species's elevation range (S. Mahood in litt. 2012).
Conservation Actions Underway
It is resident in the Ngoc Linh (Kon Tum) Nature Reserve and Ngoc Linh (Quang Nam) proposed nature reserve.
