Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as fairly common in suitable habitat. The species has been introduced to the UK where it now numbers approximately 1,000-2,000 individuals (Madge and McGowan 2002).

Trend justification: The population is declining owing to timber extraction, capture for the cagebird trade and over-hunting for food (del Hoyo et al. 1994).
