Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is reported to be still common in some areas (Flegg and Madge 1995, Higgins et al. 2001). This population is probably fluctuating in line with drought cycles, although habitat degradation by introduced herbivores (del Hoyo et al. 2007) could be causing a steady decline.
