Taxonomic note
Oriolus oriolus and O. kundoo (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) were previously lumped as O. oriolus following AERC TAC (2003), Cramp et al. (1977-1994), Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) and Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: In Europe, the total population size is estimated at 8,740,000-14,600,000 mature individuals, with 4,370,000-7,260,000 breeding pairs (BirdLife International 2021), and comprises approximately 65% of the species' global range, so a very preliminary estimate of the global population size is between 13,400,000-22,500,000 mature individuals, although further validation of this estimate is desirable. The species' population in Europe is considered to have remained relatively stable over three generations (10.32 years) (BirdLife International 2021). This species is considered to have a high dependency on forest habitat, which is estimated to be declining at a slow rate within its mapped range (Global Forest Watch 2024). As Europe holds the majority of the species' global range, the global population trend is considered to be stable over three generations.
