Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as 'fairly common' (Stotz et al. 1996). Although still abundant in remoter parts of its range, the species has declined appreciably in many parts of its range owing to hunting pressure and a reduction in suitable habitat. The species is also predated upon by a variety of mammalian and avian predators (del Hoyo et al. 1992).
