This species is listed as Near Threatened because it is thought to be undergoing a moderately rapid decline due to habitat loss and fragmentation as well as capture for the cagebird trade.

The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as 'fairly common' (Stotz et al. 1996).

The population is inferred to be declining as a result of habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as trapping for the cage bird market (Alonso et al. 2012, Ayón Güemes et al. 2013).
Pyrrhulagra nigra is endemic to Cuba and surrounding islands.
This species is found in forest and mangroves, as well as in brushy areas (Rising 2016).
This species is affected by habitat loss, and fragmentation as well as by trapping for the cage bird market (Alonso et al. 2012, Ayón Güemes et al. 2013). Forest loss within the species's range is currently estimated at ~2.8% across a ten year period (Tracewski et al. 2016).
