Taxonomic note
Campephilus haematogaster and C. splendens (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were previously lumped as C. haematogaster following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified given recent taxonomic splits. The species is described as 'uncommon' (Stotz et al. 1996) and as locally quite numerous in Colombia, rare to locally uncommon in Ecuador, and rare in Peru (del Hoyo et al. 2002).
Trend justification: The species is undergoing a moderate decline (Partners in Flight 2019).
