Justification of Red List category
This species is relatively scarce across its range, and is restricted to forest habitats. It is likely to be declining moderately rapidly overall, as a result of ongoing habitat loss and trapping for the cagebird trade. It is therefore considered Near Threatened, and should be monitored carefully.
Population justification
The population size of this species has not been quantified; it is considered locally common.
Trend justification
A remote sensing study found that forest within the range of the species was lost at a rate of 16% over three generations (Tracewski et al. 2016). The species is additionally captured for the cagebird trade. However, as the species may be tolerant of secondary habitats, the rate of decline is believed to approach, but not meet, 30% over three generations.
Platylophus galericulatus is restricted to the Sundaic lowlands, from south Tenasserim, Myanmar, peninsular Thailand, Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, Kalimantan, Sumatra and Java, Indonesia and Brunei (BirdLife International 2001). It is generally uncommon throughout this range.
This species occurs in lowland evergreen forest, both primary and tall secondary, up to 1,500 m.
Rates of forest loss in the Sundaic lowlands have been extremely rapid, owing partly to the escalation of illegal logging and land conversion, with deliberate targeting of all remaining stands of valuable timber including those inside protected areas. Forest fires have also had a damaging effect (particularly in 1997-1998). The magnitude of these threats may be allayed by this species's tolerance of hill and submontane forests, which are under less pressure from logging and agricultural conversion. The species is captured for the cagebird trade. Particularly subspecies galericulatus, which occurs on Java, is now so rare in the wild that subspecies coronatus is increasingly targeted to compensate for the scarcity of galericulatus on the market (D. Jeggo in litt. 2018).

No targeted conservation actions are known for this species, although it occurs in a number of protected areas.

Conduct repeated surveys within the species's range to determine its current distribution and abundance, as well as assess population trends and rates of habitat loss. Conduct ecological studies to improve understanding of its precise habitat requirements, tolerance of secondary habitats and response to fragmentation. Effectively protect significant areas of suitable forest at key sites, in both strictly protected areas and community-led multiple use areas.
