LC
Coppery-bellied Puffleg Eriocnemis cupreoventris

Justification

Justification of Red List category
This species has a very large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence <20,000 km² combined with a declining or fluctuating range size, habitat extent/quality, or population size and a small number of locations or severe fragmentation). The population trend appears to be stable, and hence the species does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size has not been quantified, but it is not believed to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (<10,000 mature individuals with a continuing decline estimated to be >10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

Population justification
The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as locally fairly common (Heynen and Boesman 2020).

Trend justification
The population trend has not been investigated. The species occurs in a variety of edge, open and shrubby habitat (Heynen and Boesman 2020) and tree cover loss is negligible within the range (<1% over ten years; Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Thus, there is currently no evidence of any declines or major threats, and the population is suspected to be stable.

Distribution and population

Eriocnemis cupreoventris occurs in the Mérida mountains, north-west Venezuela, and along both slopes of the East Andes from Norte de Santander to Cundinamarca, north-east Colombia (Hilty and Brown 1986, Fjeldså and Krabbe 1990).

Ecology

It occurs in montane and elfin forest borders, thickets and shrubbery, páramo vegetation with scattered low shrubs and secondary scrub, sometimes in forest interior (Heynen and Boesman 2020).

Threats

A potential threat to the species is the loss and degradation of its habitat, as forests and páramo are cleared for crop cultivation and pasture (Forero 1989, Stattersfield et al. 1998).

Conservation actions

Conservation Actions Underway
CITES Appendix II.

Conservation Actions Proposed
Search for the species in potentially suitable habitat at new sites. Obtain an accurate estimate of its population size and trends. Study its ecology and ability to persist in degraded and fragmented habitats. Monitor population trends. Protect areas of suitable habitat within the range.
