Justification of Red List category
This species has a small population, which is likely to approach the threshold for Vulnerable under Criterion C, but is uncertain and may be smaller. The population size appears to be declining as a result of nest parasitism by Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis). The population is fragmented into isolated subpopulations, the largest of which is likely to have considerably more than 1,000 mature individuals, but is uncertain and may have fewer than 1,000 mature individuals. The area of occupancy is not thought to approach the threshold for Vulnerable under Criterion B2, but is uncertain and may be smaller. There are likely to be continuing declines in the species's extent of occurrence, area of occupancy, number of locations, extent and quality of habitat, but the species is not thought to be severely fragmented and is not undergoing extreme fluctuations, and there are likely to be more then ten locations. For these reasons, the species is listed as Near Threatened.
