Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as uncommon in Peru, while uncommon to locally common in Ecuador and numerous in Podocarpus National Park and in Tapichalaca Biological Reserve in Ecuador (Krabbe and Schulenberg 2003).

Trend justification: The species is not considered under pressure from human activities. Tree cover loss is negligible within the range (1% over ten years; Global Forest Watch 2021, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein) and its preference for bamboo thickets suggest that the species is able to tolerate a certain degree of habitat degradation (Greeney and Krabbe 2020). Therefore, in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats, the population is suspected to be stable.
