Taxonomic note
Bambusicola thoracicus and B. sonorivox (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were previously lumped as B. thoracicus following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993), the gender agreement of which follows David and Gosselin (2002b).

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is reported to be common in many areas (del Hoyo et al. 1994; Fuller et al. 2000). The population is declining owing to loss of habitat caused by agricultural encroachment and urbanisation as well as over-hunting (del Hoyo et al. 1994).
