Justification of Red List category
This species is listed as Near Threatened because it has a small range and occupies a habitat type that is fragmented and becoming more so as habitat is destroyed. Its EOO is sufficiently large to not meet the threshold for Vulnerable under criterion B, but any reduction in range as a result of habitat loss may lead to this species being uplisted in the future.
Population justification
The population size has not been quantified but it is common where it is found (Whitney et al. 2013).
Trend justification
The species is inferred to be declining in line with habitat loss and fragmentation.
Chico's Tyrannulet is found in south east Amazonas, Brazil, from the R. Madeira to the Aripuanã and R Madeirinha in central Amazonia. It may also occur in adjacent parts of Rondônia and Mato Grosso.
This species occurs in campina shrub and woodland habitat, which has become fragmented within its range
The development of the BR-230 road which goes through much of the campina habitat in this species’s range, threatening this habitat (Whitney et al.2013). Development of this road may also involve quarrying for sand within the campina habitat (Whitney et al. 2013), and once complete it will make the area more accessible for logging and agriculture.
Conservation Actions Underway
Conservation Actions Proposed
Conduct further surveys to get a better idea of population size and trend estimates. Investigate the possible future impacts of the development of the BR-230 road. Protect its remaining habitat.
