Population justification: Wetlands International (2021) estimated the total population in southern Africa to number between 11,000-16,000 individuals, and the population in eastern African to number 6,500 individuals. The global population estimate is therefore 17,500-22,500 total individuals, roughly equating to 11,500-14,900 mature individuals, and placed here in the band 10,000-19,999 mature individuals.

Trend justification: The population in eastern Africa is believed to be stable or increasing based on data from 1995-2015 (Wetlands International 2021). The larger southern African population showed an increase between 1995-2017, but this may in part be due to improved counts (Wetlands International 2021). The short-term trend of this population between 2008-2017 is more uncertain (Wetlands International 2021). Therefore, the population is currently estimated to be stable, until more definitive evidence for the possible increase is shown.
