Justification of Red List category
This species is very poorly known, but it is likely to have a small global population. Trends in the population are unknown, but it is tolerant of secondary and scrub habitats, suggesting that it is not at imminent risk. Further studies are urgently needed, however, in order to clarify the situation. It is currently listed as Near Threatened.
Population justification
The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as generally uncommon to locally not uncommon (del Hoyo et al. 2007).
Trend justification
Data are lacking on trends, but presence in secondary and scrub habitats suggest that it may not be declining at present.
This species occupies a restricted range in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Nagaland, north-east India and northern Myanmar. There have been few recent records and its current status is poorly known, although this is at least in part because much of its range is infrequently visited by ornithologists.
This species inhabits secondary growth, thickets, tall grasslands with scattered shrubs or dense bushes in stony scrub-covered ravines and hills, from the lowlands up to c.900 m.
Little is known of the status of this species. It may be threatened by habitat degradation through increased grazing and agricultural conversion, as well as firewood cutting.
Conservation Actions Underway
No targeted conservation actions are known for this species, but it may be found in Namdapha National Park (P. Rasmussen in litt. 2016).
Conservation Actions Proposed
Surveys are required to establish its current distribution and population size, the extent of habitat and threats faced by this species. Protect areas of suitable habitat.
