Buff-breasted Babbler Pellorneum tickelli

Taxonomy

Taxonomic note
Previously placed in Trichastoma (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) but moved to this genus following Cai et al. (2019). Previously considered conspecific with P. buettikoferi.
Subspecies garoense previously and erroneously listed under junior synonym assamense; however, these names are subjective synonyms and two different taxa may indeed be separable in this region (Dickinson & Cibois 2010, Rasmussen & Anderton 2012). Five subspecies currently recognized.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as generally common, although uncommon in south-west China (del Hoyo et al. 2007). This species is considered to have a medium dependency on forest habitat, and tree cover is estimated to have declined by 12% within its mapped range over the past 10 years (Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Therefore, as a precautionary measure, it is tentatively suspected that this loss of cover may have led to a decline of between 1-19% in the species' population size over the same time frame.
