LC
Brush Bronzewing Phaps elegans

Taxonomy

Taxonomic note
Closely related to P. chalcoptera. Subspecific arrangement tentative, and further work needed to clarify the significance of observed variation; subspecies neglecta (SE Australia) sometimes recognized (Gibbs et al. 2001), but probably not tenable (Schodde and Mason 1997). Two subspecies currently recognized.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as locally common (Gibbs et al. 2001). The population is suspected to be in decline owing to loss of favoured coastal heath habitat; the species has also declined in areas of apparently suitable habitat, perhaps due to predation by foxes and domestic cats (del Hoyo et al. 1997).
