Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as 'uncommon' (Stotz et al. 1996). The population is suspected to be in decline owing to changing agricultural practices, increased use of fire and a shift from farming camelids to farming sheep, all of which have led to the degradation and destruction of polylepis woodlands (del Hoyo et al. 2001).
