Coeligena violifer, C. dichroura, C. albicaudata and C. osculans (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were previously lumped as C. violifer following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Trend justification: This species is suspected to be declining locally owing to ongoing habitat loss although its preference for open habitats may mean that it is able to adapt to degraded habitats (del Hoyo et al. 1999).
