Taxonomic note
Previously (Handbook of the Birds of the World and BirdLife International 2022) placed in Estrilda but moved to current genus following Olsson and Alström (2020). Proposed subspecies torrida (described from Inhaminga, in C Mozambique) and poliogastra (from Inhambane, in S Mozambique) treated as synonyms of incana. Two subspecies recognized.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as uncommon or scarce and easily over-looked (Clement 1999). The population is suspected to be declining owing to ongoing habitat destruction in parts of its range and exploitation for the cagebird trade (Fry and Keith 2004).
