Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as 'fairly common' (Stotz et al. 1996). This species is suspected to be in decline owing to human encroachment, destruction of polylepis woodland, degradation of paramo and jalca grasslands and encroachment into polylepis woodland of more adaptable and dispersive bird species (del Hoyo et al. 1999).

Trend justification: This species is suspected to be in decline owing to human encroachment, destruction of polylepis woodland, degradation of paramo and jalca grasslands and encroachment into polylepis woodland of more adaptable and dispersive bird species (del Hoyo et al. 1999).
