Justification of Red List category
This species has been listed as Near Threatened owing to evidence that is has undergone a moderately rapid population decline over the past three generations.
While the population in some parts of the range has been stable or increasing due to conservation action, reductions are suspected to be rapid in parts of the Himalayas and India, and in the isolated South African population. Declines are attributed to non-target poisoning, including from diclofenac, but also direct mortality due to collisions with energy infrastructure, increased disturbance and a reduction in food availability.
