Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as 'uncommon' (Stotz et al. 1996). The population was once thought to be declining owing to overgrazing of native grasslands in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. However, there is no evidence that it occupied these grasslands and its current preferred habitat of temperate shrubland is not threatened and the population is believed to be stable throughout its range (Vuilleumier 1997).
