Population justification: The population size has not been directly estimated, but based on reported home range sizes of the Morepork, N. novaeseelandiae, in New Zealand (3.5-307 ha [Imboden 1975, Pryde and Green 2016]) and Southern Boobook, N. boobook, in Australia (18-206 ha [Olsen et al. 2011]) and assuming that only a proportion of its range is occupied, then the population size of this species may fall in the range of 2,500-9,999 mature individuals.

Trend justification: The population is suspected to be in slow to moderate decline owing to on-going habitat loss and degradation. The rate of decline is not thought to be more rapid because the species seems to tolerate human-modified habitats.
